While the Republicans were busy making noise in Tampa, President Barack Obama was visiting important swing-state universities rallying young voters and watching Hurricane Isaac.

On Tuesday, President Obama was busy campaigning in the scorching heat rallying universities students in Iowa. At Iowa State University Obama started by saying, the country’s thoughts were with everyone in New Orleans and in harm’s way of the approaching hurricane.

Obama is trying to reignite the youth enthusiasm that helped him win the election in 2008. He won an overwhelmingly high percentage of young voters in his victory over John McCain. He outdistanced McCain two to one in that department and he needs them this election year, as the polls show he and Republican nominee Mitt Romney are in a tight neck and neck race.

Obama is trying to increase the number of young voters, as he will visit three university campuses as students are just starting to settle into another school year. He addressed about 6,000 people at Iowa State. He said the students must believe in what they can do and they have come too far to turn around.

The president’s case to the young voter leans on his strong effort to make college more affordable, including supporting Pell grants, overhauling the student aid program at the federal level and pushing to ensure interest rates remain low for government student loans.

He also spoke how his administration ended the war in Iraq and was able to put an end to Bin Laden’s reign of terror. That comment received huge cheers from the crowd.

He spoke of heath care and the law’s provision that allows young adults to remain on their parents’ policy until they reach 26. He went on to Colorado State to speak Tuesday night and on Wednesday will have another rally in Virginia at the University of Virginia.
