On Tuesday, Republicans pounced on President Barack Obama’s comment that he would grade himself incomplete during his first term with regard to fixing the U.S. economy. Obama was in Virginia holding a rally prior to heading to Charlotte, North Carolina and the Democratic National Convention.
The Republicans are trying to shrink the presidential race into just a referendum on the President’s management of the U.S. economy. A reporter asked President Obama to grade his performance over his efforts on the economy. His answer provided an opening for Republican nominee Mitt Romney and the rest of the Republican to attack. Obama answered that he felt his efforts were incomplete, prior to explaining what he had done for the auto industry, the interest rate on college laws and investment into clean energy, which he explained were long term issues that would help the economy.
Obama said that due to the financial crisis, the country had lost over nine million jobs and the people in the U.S. were going through one of the hardest times in the nation’s history.
Paul Ryan, the Republican vice presidential nominee took the President to task about his remark, which showed how just an offhand remark, can quickly become fodder for campaign combat on a daily basis in such a close presidential election.
Ryan said that it was incredible that four years have passed in Obama’s presidency and still things were incomplete. The Republican VP nominee said that President Obama just wants people to hang on patiently, when in reality the country should be bouncing back from the recession and creating jobs.
