Mitt Romney the presumptive Republican Presidential nominee said on Tuesday that President Obama’s support of increasing the federal debt would put the already fragile economy on a very disastrous course. Romney tried to portray himself as a fiscal responsibility defender, while highlighting his opponent as reckless.
Romney is calling for steep spending cuts and disciplined care of the budget over the long term. He is trying to focus his campaign as one of fairness by him versus Obama’s irresponsibility.
Romney called the increased debt “a prairie fire” that was sweeping across the nation and each day nothing is done the fire is fed more. All this comes on the heels of revelations that a trusted bank in the U.S. made disastrous decisions and lost billions of dollars.
Romney also wants to focus on the struggling economy, the number one concern for voters, after gay marriage has dominated the campaign debated of late. Obama last week said he supports gay marriage, while Romney opposes it.
Romney’s campaign stop in Iowa returns the Midwestern state to the spotlight. Both of the candidates see a chance in the road to 270 electoral votes to win Iowa. In the January caucuses held in Iowa, Romney finished virtually tied for first place, while Obama carried Iowa in the 2008 general election.
Voters head to the voting polls in Oregon today for the Republican primary there. Nevertheless, Romney is focusing on November’s election, as he gets closer to the official Republican nomination. On Wednesday, Romney plans to visit Florida, another state that is key in the November election.
